Features of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV

Overview

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV is the brand's electric supertruck. What makes the almost five-ton EV pickup super? It features a variety of extreme gear and up to 1000 horsepower. That output pertains to the tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup that also includes a WTF mode—short for Watts to Freedom. The one we tested reached 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, extremely speedy for something this little. Its extended emergency stopping distance was less remarkable. GMC boasts a maximum driving range of 381 miles; the 570-hp dual-motor AWD variant has a 311-mile estimate. Range is lowered with the Extreme Off-Road option that adds 35-inch mud-terrain tires, beefier axles, and greater underbody protection. All Hummer EV trucks include a five-foot box, a height-adjustable air suspension, rear-axle steering, and Super Cruise (GM's hands-free driving software). If you don't need a pickup truck bed, there's also an SUV variant, which we assess separately. While its interior isn't on pace with its nearly six-digit price tag, there's nothing else on the road or the trails quite like the 2024 Hummer EV pickup truck.

What's New for 2024?

Sometime this year GMC is slated to offer a more economical version of the Hummer truck, which will likely still cost north of $85,000. While we await specifics about that model, the top-spec EV3X offers longer range estimations than the previous model year owing to a newly optional 24-module battery pack. GMC says the $9995 upgrade extends the truck's top range per charge to 381 miles.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

GMC Hummer EV SUV News and Reviews | Motor1.com

The pricing of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup begins at $98,845 and goes up to $106,945 depending on the trim and extras. The Hummer EV3X costs $8100 more than the EV2X, but we'd pay that to virtually double the horsepower as well as the Watts to Freedom launch-control mode that's sure to surprise our friends by permitting rocketship-like takeoffs. The EPA estimates that tri-motor versions with the basic battery and 22-inch wheels have a 314-mile range, but a new optional extended-range battery unlocks an estimated range of 381 miles. We'd skip on the larger bundle and instead get the Extreme Off-Road option. That decreases the range estimate to 298 miles but adds beadlock-capable 35-inch mud-terrain tires, beefier axles, locking differentials, increased underbody protection, and more camera viewpoints. The optional Off-Road Readiness kit adds a full-size spare tire that matches the other wheels and a vertical bed-mounted carrier. To properly enjoy our outside travels, we'd also prefer the optional detachable roof panels.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The Hummer EV now offers either two or three electric motors. Both variants feature all-wheel drive; the dual-motor system has 570 horsepower while the tri-motor version has 1000 hp. The Hummer EV Edition 1 we drove featured the latter, and it soared to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds owing to its Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control driving mode. That makes it one of the fastest pickups we've ever tested. While we were amazed by its quickness, we were underwhelmed by its braking performance. Slowing the big machine to a halt from 70 mph took an extra-long 211 feet, and repeated runs resulted in visible brake wear. Yikes. Maneuverability at low speeds is better than anticipated, a direct consequence of the rear-wheel-steering system, but once you're up and going the Hummer EV is as cumbersome to maneuver as other elevated brodozers.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Hummer EV pickup's maximum towing capacity is a hefty 12,000 pounds, but that demands opting with the 570-hp dual-motor powerplant. That surpasses the ratings for the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T, which are certified at up to 10,000 and 11,000 pounds, respectively. However, Hummers with three engines have a towing capability between 7500 and 8500 pounds. During our towing test carrying a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer, the range of our Hummer EV plummeted to barely 140 miles at 70 mph.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Hummer EV is offered with two battery sizes. The basic 20-module pack delivers an EPA-estimated driving range of 311 miles for the EV2X and 314 miles for the EV3X. The latter may be upgraded with a 24-module battery that GMC says delivers up to 381 miles of range. Opting for the Extreme Off-Road option drops that estimate to 359 miles. The Hummer EV Edition 1 we tested on our 75-mph highway route covered 290 miles on a full charge. when it attained a high charging rate of 287 kilowatts when attached to a DC fast-charger, it only averaged 98 kW, and it took more than two hours to charge its battery from 10 to 90 percent. GMC promises the Hummer EV pickup would add 100 miles of range in only 10 minutes; we required roughly twice that long.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

Future Cars: The 2024 GMC Hummer SUV Is the Lifestyle EV Off-Roader

The Hummer truck's tremendous weight is the enemy of efficiency. The three-motor variant with its standard 22-inch wheels offers an EPA-rated 58 MPGe combined. Compare that with the most powerful version of the F-150 Lightning and R1T (both equipped with 22-inch wheels) that achieve 66 and 68 MPGe, respectively. For more information regarding the Hummer EV's fuel efficiency, see the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Even though Hummers of yesteryear were mostly SUVs, the Hummer EV takes the shape of a crew-cab pickup truck with a five-foot-long bed. Interior materials may be of better quality given the Hummer's price tag and its interior isn't as roomy as GMC Sierra 1500 crew cabs. But the cabin may be exposed to the elements with optional detachable roof panels that revive a T-top–esque style prominent in GM sports and muscle vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s. When in place, the translucent panels are identical to a standard panoramic glass sunroof, but pulling them off and stowing them in the Hummer's front trunk gives the truck a convertible atmosphere similar to that of the Jeep Gladiator. Inside, many moon-inspired touches—such as a moon-boot imprint on the dead pedal and speaker grilles that portray the Sea of Tranquility—serve as not-so-subtle reminders of GM's link to NASA astronauts and the electrically driven Apollo 15 lunar rover that the firm helped develop.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A big 13.4-inch display serves as the infotainment screen, and there's a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel as well. GMC has commissioned Epic Games—maker of the immensely popular Fortnite video game—to produce the visuals for the Hummer EV's infotainment system. The high-resolution screen and complex graphics look wonderful, but we noted some obvious latency that signals the system doesn't have nearly the processing power it needs to keep up with the software's capabilities. A variety of connection capabilities are included, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and GM's OnStar telemetry system.
